Het proces<strong> wordt uitgevoerd door zuurstof toe te voegen<\/strong> bij een temperatuur tot 570 \u00b0C.<br>\n\u00a0<br>\nTijdens het nitreren of nitrocarboneren wordt op het werkstuk een verbindingslaag van slechts enkele micrometers gevormd. Bij oxideren reageren de vrije ijzermoleculen en de ijzernitriden van deze verbindingslaag met de ingebrachte zuurstof tot stabiel ijzeroxide, dat als een maximaal 3 \u00b5m dunne oxidelaag op het oppervlak van het onderdeel wordt afgezet. Deze laag is uiterst chemisch resistent en verleent in combinatie met de <strong>verbindingslaag een hoge corrosieweerstand <\/strong>en andere belangrijke eigenschappen aan het werkstuk.<br>\n\u00a0<br>\nAls een naoxidatie wordt gepland, is dit de laatste processtap onmiddellijk na het nitreren. Na het oxideren mag het oppervlak <strong>niet worden bewerkt<\/strong>, omdat hierdoor de beschermlaag zou worden verwijderd. De vorming van een verbindingslaag tijdens het nitreren is een voorwaarde voor een succesvolle en duurzame oxidatie. In vergelijking met bruneren is de beschermende werking tegen corrosie door oxideren duidelijk hoger. Volgens studies is het vergelijkbaar met de corrosiebescherming van een 10 \u00b5m dikke hardchroomlaag.<br>\n\u00a0<br>\nNaast de verbeterde mechanische eigenschappen wordt het onderdeeloppervlak ook optisch verbeterd door de grijs tot zwarte kleuring. De kleur van het oppervlak is afhankelijk van de staalkwaliteit.<br>\n\u00a0<br>\nOxideren wordt met name aanbevolen voor genitreerde onderdelen gemaakt van laaggelegeerde materialen wanneer <strong>hoge eisen aan slijtage en corrosiebestendigheid <\/strong>worden gesteld.
