Het staal wordt in een carboniserende atmosfeer verhit tot een temperatuur tussen de 900 \u00b0C en 1000 \u00b0C. Hierbij wordt de oppervlaktelaag verrijkt met koolstof.\nDit verhoogt de hardheid van de oppervlakte van onderdelen terwijl de kern vervormbaar blijft.
